Artist Biography
Ro Seung Woo was born in the countryside of South Korea. He studied arts at Santa Clara University, Art Students League of New York, and Academie de la Grand Chaumiere. He has studied under several teachers, including Jean Henry, impressionist; Kelly Detweiler and Gerald Sullivan at Santa Clara University; Mary Beth Mckenzie and Frank Mason at the Art Students League of New York; and Rene Artozoul at the Academie de la Grand Chaumiere.
As a young boy, the beautiful rice fields and mountain scenery of Korea’s Chungnam province inspired his artistic talents from an early age. In junior high school, Mr. Ro placed first in the annual statewide Students Art Competition. Since his childhood, he has been painting whenever he has the chance. He founded the Korean Sunday Artists Association in San Francisco, California in 1972 and led a group of artists on weekly Sunday outings to various scenic locations throughout the San Francisco Bay Area To paint landscape artwork. After an early retirement, he has continued to pursue his studies in art institutions and regularly seeks out new inspiration for his works.
Mr. Ro’s artwork has been displayed at various venues over the past decades. As a professor at Hankuk University of foreign Studies in Seoul, he was regularly invited to join in the annual art exhibition event show casing its student’s artistic talents as a guest artist. Mr. Ro held his first solo exhibition at the Woon-hyun Palace Art Gallery in Seoul, Korea in 1999. His works have been displayed at group exhibitions, including at the Art Students League of New York Gallery in 2004. The 26th national mixed arts exhibition and the 32nd national modern art exhibition of Korea in 2011. He was placed “The best picture” from the 26th national Modern Art Exhibition and “The Excellent Picture” from the 32nd national Modern Art Exhibition. Mr. Ro has been a juror for the highly prestigious Sarang Art Competition in Seoul, Korea since 2015.
